What's Good???

Good Morning!!! Tuesday Gratitude Practice is here!!! How will you take what you are grateful for through the rest of your day? This isn't just about writing it down and sending it back… put it out there! Let the world feel your appreciation! Let's make a difference.

This only takes a few moments to do but gives to you for much, much longer. So put down whatever you are doing and take a couple of minutes for yourself. Every Tuesday morning I am going to ask you to write down 5 things that you are grateful for and email them to me (keep for yourself as well). What are you feeling gratitude around? Here are mine for this week:

Sydnee. Staying Up. Sleeping In. My Guitar. Tuesdays.

There are no right or wrong answers. It is about what you are grateful for. It is proven that doing this once a week makes you happier, healthier, exercise more and less sensitive to perceived slights. You will sweat the small stuff less and focus on what really matters.

So… what are you waiting for???

Food for thought:

I may be chronologically 39 but in reality I am ageless. I enjoy my life and everything in it. This acceptance and ability to go with the flow keeps me bouncing around the same way I did when I was 30 years younger. I enjoy the unknown (it is like christmas morning to me) and love surprises. I look forward to playing and am never bored. Life is best lived in the moment and our moments are so abundant that it is like winning the lottery on a daily basis to me, this life. So much to see, learn and do. So many people to love and to love you back. Growing up is fantastic if you never let go of love and curiosity. The thing is, many people believe that growing up means leaving the parts of life that were fun, silly, experimental, wondrous and curious behind. I believe that aging, in part, is due to the cutting off of the vital energetic flow. We prepare for and accelerate our demise with the present day belief of what growing up is.

If you are someone who spends most of their time unimpressed with the things around them you might be suffering from "grownupitis" and there is a way out; it doesn't have to be terminal. You can find your way back to love, joy and fun no matter how far down the path to stagnation you have run. The first thing you will need to recognize is that love, joy and fun are never far from you… they are residents inside of you. You may have neglected them but they won't leave, they just need to be nurtured, watered as it were. One of the best ways to nurture love, joy and fun is to do something that you deem immature or childish… or that you may believe is for kids only, like hopscotch, swings, jump rope, trampoline, thumb wrestling, making faces, juggling, playing with putty, coloring or simply dancing around your house. Do something that takes away any sign of appropriateness away, like a whoopie cushion in a board meeting! Let go of trying to control an outcome and just do some stuff for fun. See how it feels to be free.

The second thing that can help you live your moments with reckless abandon is to own your feelings and let others own theirs too. When you release the need to control others you have more time to have fun. Seriously. When you stop trying to get everything to work out in some way or another you have more time to do the things you love. We make things so complicated and we resist the abundance of ease that actually exists. When you love something love it, when you don't, don't. We put up so many walls to love, joy, fun and wonder based on beliefs that are absolutely arbitrary. Create the reality you would like to live in and then live in it! This is your journey, your path, your universe… explore it, love it!

Grab Happy

Howdy! I was recently working with a client discussing tempering joy… It isn't the first time I have had this discussion, it is rather commonplace actually. Many people have a hard time allowing themselves to celebrate good news, possible successes or simply enjoy the moments they have for fear of those moments being gone. Now, not getting too excited about things because you could end up disappointed is like not washing up because you are just gonna get dirty again; except that every day you get dirty without fail and you need a shower/bath… bad shit happening isn't as frequent as that. No matter how you slice it, not allowing yourself to be happy because something bad could happen is simply flawed thinking and a sign that there is a life that is fear based being lived (if we can call it that).

The bottom line is that something bad is going to happen to most of you. The first reason is your judgment around your life experiences as bad or good. It is true that most people have a good category and a bad category and place things in their lives in one of the other. The lists in these categories are not set in stone and, depending on what is going on in your life, change from time to time (which tells you that good and bad are about as reliable as a 2 year old keeping a secret). When you have a bad and a good outcome you bring probability into existence. Just like flipping a coin, you will get both sides to show up evenly if you keep flipping. The other reason something bad is going to happen is because you expect it to. You see the downside so it shows itself to you. Everything likes attention and when you give yours to something that something get's fed and grows bigger.

So now that you know something is going to happen that is the opposite of good (in your opinion) what is the reason to, when nothing bad is happening, not enjoy your life? When something isn't happening, that we don't want to happen, what is the point of focusing on it? Well, most people think that they can prepare for the bad that will happen. Let me explain, you rejecting joy will never prepare you for devastation. You cannot get around feeling sad because you never allow yourself to feel happy, life doesn't work that way. You trying to not feel bad by never feeling good doesn't make the things in life that are hard, less hard. It just makes most of your life depressing. So, since you already believe that happiness is fleeting, why not live it to its fullest when you aren't going through hell. If you are certain shit is going to hit the fan, run around getting as much joy as you can until things go south, stock pile it! Then, when they do, and for you they always do, feel sad until you don't… then be happy as all get out again.

Another way to live is to recognize that labeling things bad and good is a paradigm that isn't mandatory. When you shift your paradigm to recognize that the purpose of all your life experience is to help you grow, you let go of worrying about the next thing that will show up. You begin to look forward to your life instead of bracing for it. Your baseline becomes happiness and contentment and nothing else really seems to penetrate or bleed through for too long. But, that is only if you want to see things absolutely different.

Either way, let go of the pain that doesn't exist and when it enters your life move through it instead of holding on.

There are no right or wrong answers.  It is about what you are grateful for.   It is proven that doing this once a week for three months (actually just 9 weeks) makes you happier, healthier, exercise more and less sensitive to perceived slights.  You will sweat the small stuff less and focus on what really matters.

So… what are you waiting for???

Food for thought:

What is going on in your world right now?  What are the things that are making you smile?  People?  Love?  Work?  These are your gifts.  At any point in your day you can call upon these gifts and open them.  You just need to remember that they are always there for you.  Those moments of joy.  If you are lamenting, struggling, feeling depleted you are almost certainly imagining something that isn't happening right now.  You are going over something in your past or imagining something in your future (in a negative way) and you are nowhere near where you actually are.  When you leave yourself you feel unsafe, depressed, alone.  These worries, this blue feeling, this is you leaving you and coming back again.

Leaving oneself can be done in all manner of ways.  You can eat yourself into a state of numbness, you can do the same with drink.  You can keep busy so you don't have to hear what you are feeling.  Or you go over something that happened that made you feel small, less than, helpless.  You go over it so you don't have to be big, take ownership or responsibility.  You stay in that small place instead of assuming the role of caregiver for your soul.  You leave yourself by staying regressed, by ditching your knowing, by letting your power slip away.  When you come back you bring the stories of past and ideas of future with you.  The disconnect sometimes hurts…

Before you can stay with yourself, you need awareness on when and how you leave.  To gain awareness you must practice paying attention to where your mind goes when you are feeling down.  What is the language you use, what routines do you have around your sadness?  When you have gained that awareness you can now work toward change.  Until you know you don't know.  It is simple.  Start with knowing you have no reason to not enjoy this moment.  If you aren't you have work to do.  Some moments are great and there is no information in them except the moment itself.  Others, well, that is where your work is and that moment is as big of a gift as any other. :)

Be where you are or you will be somewhere else.  If you decide to go, pick the destination wisely and stay for only a short time lest you miss out on right now, which is all there is anyway.
